Fairfax County in northern Virginia encompasses 17 neighborhoods over approximately 400 square miles and houses more than a million people. With such dense population, County staff recognized a need to provide their citizens with easier access to important planning and development documents.
The project began in 2021 with the conversion of the County’s Zoning Ordinance and Public Facilities Manual into the enCodePlus software system. Since then, we have added the Comprehensive Plan – 2017 Edition and its associated Area Plans. All documents have the standard enCodePlus features, including mobile-responsive site views, links to the county website, and Adobe PDF Generator capability, but each also has some unique features.
The Zoning Ordinance includes a Development Calculator that factors in multiple complicated regulations to help users estimate the number of required parking spaces for specific development projects. The Public Facilities Manual utilizes the Custom Indexing feature to compile Plates from throughout the document into one page. Custom landing pages introduce users to the Policy Plan and Area Plans that comprise the county’s Comprehensive Plan and assist them in navigating the plan by providing direct links to plan sections.
enCodePlus and Fairfax County look forward to collaborating on future plans.
